Why Email Protection Matters for Your Business (And What to Do About It)

Email is still the #1 way most small and medium businesses communicate—with customers, suppliers, and even banks. But it’s also a top target for cybercriminals. That’s why protecting your company email is more important than ever.

What’s at Risk?

You’ve probably heard stories of businesses losing money through fake invoices, hacked email accounts, or customers receiving scam emails that look like they came from the company—but didn’t. The financial and reputational damage can be serious.

How to Protect Your Email (Without Needing to Be a Tech Expert)

There are three key protections you can put in place for your domain (the bit after the @ in your email address):

  • SPF (Sender Policy Framework)
This tells other email systems which servers are allowed to send emails on your behalf. It helps stop fraudsters sending fake emails that appear to come from your domain.

  • DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail)
This adds a digital signature to your emails, proving they haven’t been changed during transit and that they really came from you.

  • DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance)
This works alongside SPF and DKIM to tell other email systems what to do with suspicious emails—reject, quarantine, or allow—and gives you reports so you can see if someone is trying to misuse your domain.

What Happens If You Don’t Set These Up?

If these protections aren’t in place—or aren’t set up properly—you may run into:

  • Email fraud – others could send fake emails from your domain.

  • Lost trust – customers may stop opening your emails if they’ve seen scam messages pretending to be you.

  • Delivery issues – your genuine emails might end up in spam folders or be blocked entirely.
